What does it take to conquer a
disease? It takes strength and knowledge and money and
time and support and determination.
We never expect an illness
or disability to invade and change our lives. But
illness and disabilities are unpredictable many times
and can indeed change everything. It is something that
can affect any of us, or a family member at any given
time.
There
are two words that are forefront in my vocabulary these
days, Diabetes and Cancer. Two words, two
diseases, two people.
What would you
do if you or a family member were to suddenly be hit
with a chronic illness or disability? Where would you go
to find the support and the information that you need?
With whom would you turn for answers?

conquer the disease that has invaded their life.

You read, a lot, everything you can get your hands on
about the illness that has now engulfed your life. And
you talk to doctors and nurses and medical providers and
patients and even strangers and before long you know
more than you ever thought you could know. And in the
process you learn more about yourself.
Being
Pro-Active with the health issues in your life is
the answer.
If

There

not your Doctor may not always know about the “latest
and greatest” out there. It’s your health, it’s
your life. Ask questions, talk to people, learn about
procedures, therapies and alternatives.

Examining Diabetes

This disease can be passed genetically or may strike at random.
You may have been diagnosed with it while you were pregnant, you may have acquired the disease from years of over eating on sweets. It hits every race, age group and millions of people have it. The disease is diabetes
and most people who have the disease are not even aware of it.
The symptoms of diabetes vary from person to person and there are 3 types of the disease-Type 1, Type 2, and gestational. All three variations cause the body to fail in producing or utilizing insulin, a natural hormone in our bodies that breaks down sugar and carbohydrates. People
affected by diabetes may experience frequent urination, a feeling of constant thirst or hunger. They may have a sudden loss in weight and be fatigued. They may be often times in a bad mood or any combination of these symptoms together.
Type 1 diabetes, or juvenile diabetes, is characterized by the body's complete inability to produce insulin, and most commonly develops in children or young adults. This is a serious form of the disease, and those diagnosed must take steps, including a possible change in life style, in order to prevent further complications. The risks of Type 1 diabetes include heart disease, nerve or kidney damage, and even blindness.
The most common form of the disease, Type 2 diabetes, involves the body's reluctance to produce enough insulin, or the cells within the body reject the insulin provided. This condition causes the body's cells to starve for energy, and the resulting buildup of glucose in the system
can lead to internal organ damage. Sufferers of this type of diabetes face the same risks as those diagnosed with type 1, and must make similar adjustments in order to ensure they remain healthy.
Gestational Diabetes occurs in women towards the end of their pregnancies. Health Care providers speculate it is caused by hormones that help a baby grow but stop the woman's insulin. While the babies of women suffering from Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are at risk for birth defects
those of Gestational Diabetes are not. However it is possible the babies may intake the excess glucose in the mother's and body and lead to a condition known as macrosomia. To avoid complications with Gestational Diabetes the expectant mothers should follow the guidelines
of a doctor and any treatments prescribed. Pre-diabetes is a term for people not yet suffering diabetes but who have a higher than normal glucose level.
If diagnosed by a doctor early enough treatments can be prescribed to correct the problems before full blown diabetes develops. Diabetes is a disease that can strike anyone and is common. People who are worried they may be at risk should consult a doctor for testing. The cause of
diabetes is still unknown but the information we have can offer people at risk methods of possible prevention.

~Fast and Tasty Tortilla Chips~
Ingredients:
6 soft flour tortillas, your favorite flavor
dried seasonings such as garlic powder, onion powder, dill,
chili powder, parsley, oregano, cumin
non-stick vegetable cooking spray
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 4000 F.
Spray one side of a tortilla generously with non-stick spray. Gently rip tortilla into “chip” sizes and
shapes.
Place spray side up on a non-stick baking sheet.
Sprinkle lightly with your favorite dried seasoning(s).
Bake for 4 minutes, turn chips over.
Bake for 1-2 minutes more or until lightly brown and crisp.
Serving Tips
You may use any style soft flour tortilla that you like, such as tomato basil, whole wheat or spinach. Plus, have FUN and be creative with your favorite seasonings. If you’re going to serve your chips with your favorite pasta dish, go ahead and season them accordingly with spices such as garlic, oregano, basil, or mixed
Italian seasoning.
Great served with casseroles, pastas, soups, chilis, even scrambled eggs! And don’t forget to serve them with your favorite dips instead of store bought chips. Yours will have much less fat and sodium than most prepackaged chips you purchase at the store.
Makes 3 - 6 servings.
